Gardening
Another calendar month vanish by , an interesting commixture of cool and red-hot and gay weather . The garden has react by generating a tonne of line of work , from tie in climbing plant life , to weeding , tidying and potting on . Busy times . In this series of monthly posts , I am attempting to deliberate with a decisive heart the delimitation as a whole rather than single plant . I ’m await for what works , what need to come out , what might be missing , that elusiveje ne sais quoithat might lift the whole thing . Let ’s take a spin .
Rear Garden
borderline 1 – lastly , a bit of colouring material . Not much , but a chip . The aubrieta is out , and the dianthus at the front leftfield is bushing out very nicely with new increase . I mature about 80 of these piddling plant last year , I have a few clumps dotted about . I am anticipating a profusion of long hold up pink peak . The alliums are also make their front felt , that should be a good display . I think I could do with a number of height in the back of this border . The loosestrife does get to a decent height and the Scots heather is quite tall ( it needs staking ) but I think I need more heigth along the length of the perimeter . Ideally I would have plant life mostly covering the front of the two cock-a-hoop planter on the terrace behind . That Rosmarinus officinalis is hold up on borrowed time I think , and the pheasant ’s tail grass is a routine unruly over on the right . There are two plants there , I might take the with child one out to let a bit of elbow elbow room . I remark that there is quite a bit of empty space , a good matter as I have stacks to plant out .
moulding 2 – The bush at the patio end have both been pruned , and are both now discombobulate out novel growth , the physocarpus more sky-high than the cotinus . The clematis and roses along the fence blood are cast on good emergence this year . The roses are all new planting this class , either from cuttings or unexampled purchase . I am hoping for some nice coverage of that fencing this class . The clematis are in their second twelvemonth , so should at least flower a short . I ’m looking forward to see how they get on together with the roses . They are all tie in , but that will be a repetition task for as long as I can enter the fence line . I have also managed to get some financial support in to some of the taller flora in advance of them need it . This is normally a belated caper for me , involving canes and chain and disappointment .

Border 3 – The wistaria is gearing up , scores of babe racemes , if we ever get any sunshine it will hail on strong . There are clematis and roses planted along the treillage in this border too , again I am expect forward to see them do their thing . There is plenty of space in this border too . In general the planting in these three borders is bet a lilliputian disorganised . I need to have a think about what I want where . I have put this off as I have half a mind to change the layout of the garden , which would significantly expand borders 1 - 3 . I require to take a crap or get off the pot .
Border 4 – The honesty was a surprise – for a start I bury it was there , and when I remembered it was , I was expecting majestic flower . More clematis at the back , I am await big thing . I will have a look at a twain of the less well launch clems as I have industrial plant waiting for spaces which could go here if the incumbents are slack off . I like this border , to my uneducated eye it seems well proportioned . I could do with add something to the remaining side , but at least I have finally got around to remove the scrappy lavender . There is way to engraft …
Border 5 – the normally shadowy border will have a fleck of light , at least for a pair of calendar month , as I have pruned back all the shrubs except the pittosporum . Neither the abelia nor the physocarpus has ever been pruned , so this is by way of a redevelopment . They do n’t seem to have minded overly , they are both throwing out newfangled growth . I have staked the pittosporum , too late perhaps , as it was tip further and further over into the garden . I ’m wondering if I should dig it up and replant in more a more traditional vertical pose . Some of the under planting is coming back from its wintertime relief , but there is still plenty of range for more shade - tolerant planting in this border . I have some berberis cuttings , kindly render by grannysgarden . They would be ideal if they root . Now that the dogwood is dress back , the weigela looks really untidy . That has never been dress either . I am going to hold back for it to flower than have at it with the cutter . search down the terminal fencing panel and on into the bowling alley , I really want to enshroud all those panels so they are more like the cheeseparing one in the last photo . That has a mounting rise up , a hydrangea and a gnome hop , plus some undesirable ivy for safe measure . That gore completely vanish .
Border 6 – Still tiny , still unloved . Still , it will at least occupy out this year , even if I do n’t get around to extending it . Most evident at the minute are the heuchera and the allium foliation , flowers before long to follow , one hope . The geum ‘ totally tangerine ’ is a decent size now . I might labor it up and divide it , get to imagine of it , I can probably get three or four plants from it . Maybe I ’ll let it blossom first . There is a gaura do a late bid and the tiarella is also about to get together the party . I probably ca n’t fit much more in to its current shape .
The Alley – not a border as such , but recent development make a salutary casing for its inclusion here . Since last time I have installed a few place - made planters and a last wall . The fern in this are just get going , they should more or less hide the shelving in a month or two . The planters just have their back - bone planting in , the climbing iron that I hope will get across the render . I have instal the necessary wire support . I intend to build up and plant up another few planter at the rear garden closing of this side - passage .
terrace steps – a thin apology to include some tulip natural process . It is my aim to have these containers continually plant up with people of colour until first Robert Lee Frost . When the tulips go over I will remove them to a less prominent posture to tolerate their unlovely foliage the necessary clip to refill the bulbs , then I have plenitude of bedding and other annuals growing away to take their place .
Front garden
Border 7 , 8 and 9 – the slightly helter-skelter planting is fulfil out nicely , despite the honorable efforts of the local bindweed gang . There is still space for more plant , always a good affair .
Border 10 – something of an rethink , a bit of irregular planting , taking a impropriety with council property , this snatch of ground is actually not in my garden . This wo n’t really do into its own until I plant out some annuals I have brew in the greenhouse . I was surprised to see the wallflower coming back to living . The edging needs doing as a matter of urging , a coarse stem in all the border …
That ’s the tour for this calendar month , what do you think ? I shall be glad to hear any ideas for plants that might occupy a speckle .
I ’ll be back next calendar month with another Border Patrol .
