Timing the harvest is the important first step in propagating ferns

An individual fern can bring on spores number in the trillion , and they ’re promiscuous to take in from the one in your yard or even in the wild . The caper is to know when they ’re unripened , too mature , or just correct for pick .

Nancy Swell , a Richmond , Virginia gardener and contributor to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden ’s handbook about fern , warns that once a frond is picked the spore will not ripen further , so precaution should be taken in your survival of the fittest . She will also attest a unsubdivided way to tell apart the flyspeck dried spore from the chaff .

For more information on bulge fern from spores and a complete list of gentle - to - maturate ferns , see Nancy ’s clause , “ Fern Propagation , Simplified , ” in the January / February 2000 issuance ofFine Gardening(#71 ) .
