Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day. January.2015
Here we are in the depths of wintertime with an frigid air current blowing , but never idea there are lovely things in bloom if we are hardy enough to go and look at them . Let ’s take off with the Witch Hazels . This is my newest addition ; an prodigality but well worth it . May I presentHamamelis‘Livia ’ .
Hamamelis x intermedia‘Livia ’
Bluebell Nursery describes the vividness as bright loss and so it is , but it also seems to have a regal tinge to it . Perhaps this is because each calyx is a purplish color . I planted Livia besides the glaucous leave of aEuphorbia .
Hamamelis x intermedia‘Livia’
I am peculiarly fond ofHamamelis x intermedia ‘ Vesna ’ which is named after the Russian Goddess of Spring . It reminds me of one I used to spring up in my last garden , called ‘ Strawberries and Cream ’ . Here it is with the first tassel just emerging from the bud .
Hamamelis x intermedia ‘ Vesna ’
And today it is fully out . I love this one , the flowers are two tone ; bright yellow with a endearing pinkie glow . They remind me of ocean urchin . By the far pool I have the orangeHamamelis x intermedia‘Jelena ’ in bloom .

I have a rather undistinguishedHamamelis molliswhich has quite small tassel . I would n’t bribe it again but it was cheesy and I ca n’t resist a steal . But it does smack delicious .

I quite forgot to check ‘ Pallida ’ to see if its lovely sulphur chicken blossom have open yet , so I will economize it for another time . The last to blossom is always ‘ Arnold Promise ’ so he is still to add up . These witch hazels have the most delicious fragrance , some impregnable than others . The Chinesemollishybrids seem too have the strongest aroma . They are tell to like an bitter soil , but I do n’t intend it matters as long as they do n’t become pee - logged and never dry out . I keep mine watered in summer which is a turn of a chore , but well worth it . If you would like to see more witch hazelnut tree , keep your eye onramblinginthegardenblog because Cathy is the Witch Hazel Queen .
The expectant joy of the wintertime garden is fragrance . I have talk about the queen of daphnes on this web log before . Now thatDaphne bholua‘Jacqueline Postill ’ is in full flower by the front door , I have noticed that anyone who comes to call has their nozzle swallow in her adorable flowers when I reach the door .
Daphne bholua‘Jacqueline Postill ’
I bed the odour ofChimonanthus praecoxtoo . I have mention before that I grow this from seed . They are very easy from seed but they do take at least 7 years to bloom . I probably would n’t have done it if I had known . I had to dig it up and keep it in a Mary Jane for a while when I propel . It pout for a year or two but now it is flower again happily . They need a spot where they can get baked by the Lord’s Day to bloom well .
Chimonanthus praecox
Also in the front garden for the delectation of passers - by I haveMahonia japonicawhich is just coming into flower and sense deliciously of lily - in - the -valley . If you require a sweet smelling mahonia , this is the one to go for . Mahonia xmedia‘Charity ’ is lovely but it has just about finished unfolding now and it does not smell closely as fresh or as strong as this one .
Hamamelis x intermedia‘Jelena’
Mahonia japonica
Another pale yellow shrub with scrumptiously fragrant flowers isCoronilla valentinasubsp.glauca ‘ Citrina ’ . This has been living in the greenhouse but the scent is so delicious that I have make up one’s mind to risk it by the back door so that I can see more of it . If the night get too cold I will have to bring it in to the firm .

The moderately pink flowers ofViburnum x bodnantense ‘ morning ’ are sunnily fragrant and bloom on bare branches . They have suffer a small damaged by a hard frost this year .
Viburnum x bodnantense ‘ New Dawn ’
My favourite winter - flowering Viburnum is the pure whiteViburnum farreri‘Candidissimum ’ . You do n’t see it very often but it is worth seek out . It necessitate to grow under tree to forestall the hoar burn its prime . I am afraid mine looks a little sorry for itself at the moment so I sha n’t show you it today . Viburnum tinusis flowering off all over the garden . I have a go at it evergreen shrub are utilitarian , but these leaves are dull front and , as I keep saying , they smell . If you do n’t consider me , go and whiff yours after it has been raining . Yuck . Anyway if you are determined to get one , ‘ Eve Price ’ is the one to go for .
Daphne bholua‘Jacqueline Postill’
Viburnum tinus‘Eve toll ’
Skimmias smell lovely when the flowers open in the spring . The buds are a delight to look at all wintertime . accidentally , they are very easy to distribute from clipping .
More delicious fragrance is provide by the musky smell ofSarcococca hookerianavar.digynawhich drifts all round the garden . This andLonicera x purpusii‘Winter Beauty ’ are substantive for a sweet smelling winter garden . ThisLonicerais more floriferous than the more usually seenLonicera fragrantissima .
Chimonanthus praecox
In the nursery I have the other floweringCamellia sasanqua ‘ Hugh Evans‘in blossom . It is quite a little flower one , but very pretty . I have been admiring the lovely redCamellia sasanqua‘Yuletide ’ on a lot of blogs I follow . mayhap next year I will plow myself to one .
Camellia sasanqua‘Hugh Evans ’
Many of the roses have flowered valorously all winter and it is time they had a repose . I have to tally with Reginald Farrer that they do look like‘withered moths ‘ by now . Well , this one does , piteous affair .
Mahonia japonica
Rose Grace
mount up the fence and in flower now isChaenomeles‘Madame Butterfly . The blossom are a pretty salmon garden pink and white . On the same fence I have a youngClematis cirrhosa‘Wisley Cream ’
genus Prunus x subhirtella ‘ Autumnalis Rosea ’
Coronilla valentinasubsp.glauca‘Citrina’
On the background there are quite a lot of treasures in prime . Quite a few hellebores are out . I have acknowledge before that it is always the paler colour that come out first .
The Summer Snowflake;Leucojum aestivumwhich I used in a vase on Monday has plenty more blossom . I have never seen it bloom in wintertime before .
Leucojum aestivum
Viburnum x bodnantense ‘New Dawn’
More seasonal are the lovely slight winter aconites;Eranthis hyemaliswhich have promote their little clit heads up everywhere . If these little treasure are glad they seed around prolifically . I like to grow them in movement with snowdrops and dainty littleCyclamen coum . They look like Baron Verulam and eggs .
Most people are familiar with the winter floweringIris unguicularisbut it has a close relation from Turkey which you do n’t see so often . It is calledIris lazica . The heyday are very similar but it has glossy green leaves .
Narcissus minor‘Cedric Morris ’ was in bloom for Christmas Day and it is still blend potent . The flower last for a long time . The next daffodil to blossom in my garden is the January floweringNarcissus‘Rijnveld ’s Early Sensation ’ . The buds look as if they are about to open .
Viburnum tinus‘Eve Price’

It must be so wonderful to have enough room for so many sweetly scented Hamamelis , not to mention all the others ! And they have beautiful flowers too . Thanks so much for sharing them all , I revel this post immensely .
Walking though your garden must be a dreaming , Chloris , with all those scented bloom . I ’ve give too little attention to scent in my current garden and will have to remedy that . I ’m astonished by the number of peak you have in your garden at this time of class . I ’m particularly jealous of the witch hazel tree , which wo n’t grow here – I need the contrary of a nursery , a refrigerated garden house .
Happy Bloom Day ! Well , I guess it ’s Witch Hazel / Mahonia / Camellia season in most mild clime gardens . It ’s a feast for the eyes and dreams for those of us who experience in cold-blooded climates . Thanks for sharing !
O my goodness , what a fantastic assembling of winter blooms ! I’v tally Mahonia japonica and Lonicera x purpusii ‘ Winter Beauty ’ to my list of plants to look for out . Happy GBBD to you , Chloris !
Wow , what an awing number of delightfully perfumed flora you have ! I will have to read your post over and over as there is so much to take in . It must be wonderful vagabondage beat your garden at the import .
I imagine that walking through your garden must be a treat for the nozzle Chloris . Talk about aroma ! ‘ Livia ’ looks most special and such a change from the common yellow and oranges . Here I ’ve only one open hellebore . I was get to say that it must be warm over in the Confederate States of America , then think we have Narcissus pseudonarcissus in flower on the far side of our stream . I also saw some daffodils and a Michaelmas daisy bloom together in the grounds of Chester Cathedral earlier this week . No wonder your leucojum aestivum is out of kilter .
I keep saying that I must get more colour into my winter garden but still have n’t draw around to it – your Witch Hazels are beautiful – but around here they are terribly expensive and would take a big chunk out of my budget .
