Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day December 2014 and a Draw.
I am a couple of days lately joining in withCarol ’s Bloom Dayon the 15th of the month but the connectedness is still subject and as I have been blogging for a year now I am interested to liken what is out now with what the garden had to offer last year .
In the back garden this prettyAbutilon megapotamicumis still blooming gayly in the shelter of the paries . Yuck , I just noticed that something has been feeding on the leafage and entrust its calling card . Kniphofia rooperiis still give up its brilliant red Verbascum thapsus . This Red Hot Poker from South Africa always blossom through the Autumn and into the Winter .
In the glasshouse the thinning I took from the wonderfulChrysanthemumChelsea Physic garden is in flower . I have a pot of nerines which always blossom long after the others have land up and these are still looking marvelous .
Hesperantha coccinea ‘Fenland Daybreak’
But these are left overs from the old year , it is much more exciting to see which Winter and Spring flower are coming out now . lease ’s come out with the hellebore .
My Christmas rose , Helleborus nigerhas been in bloom for ages now so it is well named . TheHelleborus x ericsmithii‘Shooting Star ’ is in the beginning this yr , it was still in bud for the December Bloom Day last year . I love all these ‘ ericsmithii ’ hybrids . The wildHelleborus foetidusis a bit of a weed in my garden but I like its apple green prime .
For fragrance we have the wintertime honeysuckleLonicera purpusii ‘ Winter Beauty’ . The first buds of the peerlessDaphne bhlolua‘Jacqueline Postill ’ are just opening . If you have nothing else for winter joy this is one you should essay out . The spicy flowers of theChimonanthus praecoxare just beginning to open too . Sarcococca hookerianavar.humilismay be a scrap of a mouthful to pronounce but its fragrance is grand . I would like to have a hedge of this wonderful shrub as they do in the wintertime garden at Anglesey Abbey . The Rosemary by my logic gate is in bloom and I will include it with the fragrant blossom although you have to plow it to enjoy its scent .
Hesperantha coccinea ‘Fenland Daybreak’
I have already shown you the adorable Galanthus elwesii‘Mrs . Macnamara’ . Galanthus plicatus‘Three Ships should be in bloom for Christmas . When I went to stop , I found that someone had got there before me and most of the efflorescence has been masticate off .
In the front garden theHesperantha coccinea‘Fenland Daybreak ’ is still blossom away . It has been flowering for months now .
Hesperantha coccinea ‘ Fenland Daybreak ’
I am not going to show you the left over roses , penstemons and geraniums although quite a few are still flower away . We have probably seen enough of them for this twelvemonth . And I have already shown you the wintertime jasmine;Jasminum nudiflorum , the Mahonias and theViburnum tinuswhich are all over the garden . I would love to be capable to tell you that I have witch hazels out but the buds on all of them are still quite shut . If you need to see someHamamelisyou will have to go over to Angie atAngie’sgardendiariesto see her adorable ‘ Jelena ’ . Or you could toss off over to Cathy atRamblinginthegardenbecause herHamamelisHarry ’ is just starting to open up .
So we will finish by looking forwards to a duo of forerunner of Spring . First a primula , and then I was hoping to show youNarcissusminor‘Cedric Morris ’ which is very often in salad days for Christmas . As you see it has n’t quite made it this year . It wo n’t be longsighted though .
And now I will tell you the result of the draw for the useful piddling book : ‘ Plant Names Simplified . Their Pronunciation , Derivation and Meaning . ’
As I said in my last post , I decided to have a draw for a copy of this book as a thank you . I was so delighted with the thought and ebullience with which people entered into the debate that Christina started on Monday and that I write about in my post ; ‘ Is Taxonomy too Taxing?’Thank you , all of you , for contributing and I wish I could send out you all a copy of the Christian Bible . I screw it when we all start exchanging opinions about a matter like this . I put all the names into my Transylvanian Shepherd ’s Hat and the Pianist pick one out . Anna from Green Tapestry blog was n’t include because she very sensibly already has a transcript ..
And the name that came out of the lid is Snowbird fromGardensandwildlifeblog . So congratulations to the endearing Dina . A copy of the playscript is winging its style to you as we talk .

You have a wonderful selection of blossom , is n’t it plaguey though when something beautiful has been half eaten , your poor snowdrop ! I must remember to get myself some Nerines next class , I keep thinking of them but draw a blank to enjoin them .
You still have some very lovely and fragrant flowers bloom . Congrats to the winner of the record ! I remember reading about Daphne bholua last yr about this metre , but could n’t find out it anywhere . perchance next year .
Oh Chloris such a shame that your ‘ Three Ships ’ been piece 😦 It would not be as bad if you did not have to wait another whole class for the next flower(s ) . I ’m sure that Dina will cherish her small bootleg book and will observe it both utile and informative . I recollect I remember that hat from last year – it looks most ardent and desirable .
Your Bloom Day photos reinforce my desire to find oneself that Abutilon for my front garden and prompt me of a hope I made to myself ( last year ) to plant some Nerine – I guess I need a list of 2015 garden resolutions to keep my intentions front and gist .
Oh my ! You have so many heyday bloom , and it is n’t even technically winter yet . Thanks for sharing because nothing is blooming here . Many of your peak are great emasculated flowers , too – lucky you !
You have new blooms opening up for the new class already ? I wish I had some of those . I only have months - old blooms mighty now .
What a delicacy seeing your blooms Chloris and I have been better at discover and using the latin public figure … I even come up a book i buy to learn more about the Latin in gardening …
