I had an email from a reader in Germany who had just planted someclimbing pink wine . He demand what to do with them their first year . Should heprunethem , go forth them alone ; something in between .
It ’s a well timed question because now that many of us aregoing into winterwe might be tempted to give that young climber a rap or two .
Do n’t !
I believe in let new climbers develop all they want during their first two years so they can get to size . You see , climbing roses do n’t bloom much their first season or two because they are growing to their full height . That takes a lot of energy .
It ’s like fruit tree . When they are immature they do n’t yield fruit . It ’s only when they get to mature size and stop growing that they can turn their vitality towards bring forth those Malus pumila , peaches , pears and so on .
It ’s the exact same thing with mounting roses . ( Except of path for the apples , peaches and pears part ! )
So do n’t trim those immature climb roses . If you have to tidy up them up a bit clip at some of the wilder growing here and there or bind it in , but for the first two years allow ’em grow and just keep training them !
