My local farmers ’ marketplace is Olney Farmers ’ and Artists ’ Market ( https://olneyfarmersmarket.org/ ) in Olney , Maryland – it is run by a figure of hardworking volunteers , spearheaded by Janet Terry and Judy Newton and pick out place on Sundays from 9 am until 1 pm . There are many agriculturist and artisans , always music and a cooking demonstration – upright food to deplete there – and great nutrient and flora to take home .
They organize a few fundraisers every year to raise money to support the market and the one which I late attend was held at MacBride and Gill Falcon Ridge Farm ( www.facebook.com/Falconridgefarm ) in the rolling pitcher’s mound of Westminster . Falcon Ridge Farm is have and operated by Nancy MacBride and Stanton Gill and their daughters , Chelsey and Kelly . They have 73 Acre where they have previous woods as well as a working woodlet of old and new plantings .
Stanton ’s wealth of professional knowledge as an Extension Specialist with the University of Maryland , specializing in Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ) and Entomology , is an added summation to the farm – he also learn Landscape Technology at Montgomery College . At Falcon Ridge , they uprise many variety of fruit tree – over 40 form of apple , lulu , sour and sweet cherry , Asiatic pear , persimmons and even papaw . They have berry bushes from blueberry to red and fateful raspberries , and currants , along with many kind of nut trees and grape vine . Their outflow crop are rhubarb , asparagus and strawberry , which are being harvest and sold at marketplace now .
Daikon radishes are sown throughout the orchard – the large radish ancestor grow down alongside tree diagram and bush roots and aerate the soil . Then the foliage dies on top of the footing and becomes a mulch that drive back locoweed . Nancy and Stan school all form of Allium , both ornamental and culinary , which act as a deer repellant in their gardens .
So about 50 mass gathered at Falcon Ridge Farm on a lovely , sunny day , where we drift through the garden and then had a delectable brunch in the barn , which was decorated with gorgeous flower arrangements . Food was created by Mark Mills of Chocolates and Tomatoes , and many of the vendors and military volunteer prepared and donated their green groceries , homemade cheeses , scone , breads , desserts , salads and more . The farm ’s just - pick strawberries were abundant and delectable .
We had a guided wine-coloured tasting , then a tour of the farm , as well as the hop garden at their neighbor Jessie ’s position and then we had a craft beer tasting , sweet and Zeke ’s chocolate . Everyone departed well gormandise , having feed local food and back up a good effort . Many thanks for everyone ’s concentrated work and to MacBride - Gill family for hosting the consequence .
