Several hundred hostas fill this garden with every shade of green
We are Bill and Grace Wald . Our home and gardens are place along the savings bank of the Sheyenne River in Harwood , North Dakota . We are in Zone 4 . Our property is protect from river floods with a lasting dyke / levy en masse and has a drainage ditch go through it . Because of the various elevations , we have made many terraces with lifelike fieldstone in gild to minimize erosion . We have many mature native river - bottom trees consisting of mostly ash , boxelder , and oak . With all of theshadethese trees provide , we primarily have shadowiness - loving plants andground covers . We have over thirty varieties and several hundredhostas . We do however , have a couple of sun spot with Dominicus - loving perennial . The follow exposure were taken over a two - to - three - month period .

This is ourpatio , which at one metre was our basketball game court , sandpile , and firepit . The concrete was poured in 4 - infantry squares with board between . The board rotted , and we are planting Irish moss(Sagina subulata , zone 4–8 ) .
Hosta‘Krossa Regal ’ ( Zones 3–8 )
A river bed ( dry ) in a drain ditch and a stairway lead to the patio . The garden is found with a variety of hostas , penstemon , and land covers .

The front - yard sunshine garden include Karl Foerster grass(Calamagrostisacutiflora , Zones 4–8 ) , bluestem , roses , delphinium(Delphinium elatum , Zones 3–8 ) , Asiatic lilies(Liliumhybrid , Asiatic group , Zones 4–9 ) .
