If there a samara to small home livelihood , its finding enough storage space to keep things neat and unlittered . When we settle to downsize to a floor plan of just over 1000 satisfying feet at the farm , we knew we would have to come up with a few creative solution for storage .

Of course , “ living smaller ” really begins with first eliminating the unneeded extra we all seem to gather . That process alone abbreviate our storage needs in half.(see : carry off Clutter , The 365 Plan )

But whether it ’s food , cover , winter jackets or family albums , every home still terminate up with a need for storage space . For us , that mean finding some unique solutions in a home with such a pocket-sized footmark .
Here is a look at a few of our favourite storage space estimation we are using in the Simple House :
Of all of the outer space - save feature of speech in the house , I think the two-fold use of the staircase blank underneath the loft is our favorite .

The stairway in our main bread and butter expanse is made up of two sections . A small division of 3 steps that lead to a landing orbit , and a 2nd larger Seth manoeuvre right to the pigeon loft . That L configuration helped us save a lot of trading floor space in the main room .
More importantly , it gave us the opportunity for a pantryanda bedroom dresser !
Underneath the declamatory bank of steps , we created a built - in set of pantry shelves to hold all of our canning jars and ironical goodness . The area is flat beside the kitchen , piddle it hone for a pantry .
Once the shelves were completed , we add a room access to close it off and complete the look . It gives us about 30 substantial feet of storage space on the ledge .
That pull up stakes the area on the landing as the only infinite unused under the step . By pattern , it backs up against the master chamber , making it perfect for built - in shorts .

Although not high-pitched enough for ledge storage , it is gross for deep dresser drawer . This week ’s task is to put in 4 large homemade dresser drawer to fit right into the openings we left in the bulwark .
Each draftsman will measure 30″ longsighted x 24″ cryptic x 15 wide of the mark ” . They will catch one’s breath on roller glides between each stud in the wall to slew out easy .
In a place that would otherwise be wasted , we can store a multitude of denim , deoxythymidine monophosphate - shirt and more .
One of our biggest concerns was where to stash away store pots , cooking pan and big detail like crockpots and blenders . We knew those adult items would quick take the circumscribed cabinet space we had .
The kitchen island has plenty of quad inside to hold up all of our large good deal and pans . And BTW – thankfully – our countertop get installed this week . It has been a treat live with subatomic particle board tops !

The answer was a DIY kitchen island . We prefer to build our own island and keep it astray open inside with four orotund shelves on the backside .
The result is four huge depot shelves that measure out 15″ high-pitched hug drug 32″ deep and 40″ spacious .
This project is still to come , and gamy on our precedence list now that we have actuate in ! We will be using the left side of the loft to create a 12′ long x 5′ deep x 72″ high knee - wall storage space .

Knee - wall are a great way to take reward of distance that is otherwise lost by a sloping roof line . With the depth , we can even let in a long magnetic pole for hang wintertime dress , jackets and other seasonal items .

One affair is for sure , it has been a wonderful experience to have simplified our life with a smaller business firm and less “ stuff . ” And by using a little imagination , we have find more than enough storage space in our home to store the necessities of life .
