locate just outside the urban center of Philadelphia , Tlush Family Farmis focus on mushroom , microgreens and edible flower . Commandeered by husband and married woman founders Katie and Jonathan Tlush , the speculation was launched by requisite during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic .

“ I was a dental hygienist for 15 age . When Covid run into , my husband Jon and I decided it would be upright for me to stay home with our two children , ” explain Katie . She adds that the journey to transform from gardener to professional cultivator became about combining an “ internal fulfilment to the family and producing income . ”

Taking a moment out from running Tlush Family Farm , we spoke to Katie Tlush about the benefit of climate - see indoor uprise and create the perfect environment for mushrooms . We also touched on turn a passion into a profession .

Keeping It Sunny & 70 Degrees

Tlush Family Farm is an indoor urban venture . “ At first , we pay back the chickens and then pass about six months figuring out what we require to grow and how , ” say Tlush .

“ Here in Pennsylvania we have four time of year . But we ’re 100 percent indoor agriculture , so it ’s always gay and 70 degrees in here . And we get to grow all class round . I ’m so happy growing this way . ”

Make Way for the Mushrooms

“ Mushrooms are bewitching to grow , ” say Tlush , reflecting on the conclusion to make fungus kingdom an essential focus of the farm . “ We do everything from cultivation and the research laboratory work and make spawns and mixing it all together to harvesting . ”

Tlush adds that when it descend to creating the perfect environment for grow mushroom , focusing on temperature , humidity and airflow is key .

Spotlight on Oyster Mushrooms

The farm currently specialize in oyster mushrooms . “ What make it unlike is that we develop them out to a full flush , ” says Tlush . “ We get these beautiful large jacket crown , with some as big as my head ! It ’s just wild . ”

Next up : Experiments in maitake and king oyster mushroom . “ Not being a heavy farm , we have to ensure everything is scale appropriately , ” explain Tlush of the appendage .

Supplying Creative Chefs

“ Plus partnering with my married man on something we ’re so passionate about — there ’s just nothing better . ”
