A front garden completely filled with blooms
Today we ’re in Evanston , Illinois , in the Chicago suburbia , visiting Jason Kay ’s beautiful garden .
I ’ve been gardening since around the age of 12 . ( I ’m now 62 . ) I ’ve had my current garden for 18 twelvemonth . Within days of move in , I started digging up the front yard to plant bloom , grasses , a few herbs , etc . Now about 90 % of the front is set , almost all in ornamentals . The only lawn left is for paths between the bed .
As far as challenges go , I would cite cuss , especiallyrabbitsand ( the last couple years ) four - line plant microbe . Regarding rabbits , I ’ve started to stave off sure works ; others I test to protect with chicken wire or by mixing them in with plant that are toxic ( for example , interplanting tulip with daffodils ) . Regarding thefour - lined industrial plant bug , I have a no - insect powder insurance policy , so mostly I just tolerate the damage . The other challenge , which comes from using LOTS of magniloquent plant , is flora flopping . I do a lot of creativestaking , use tomato cages , and do a bunch of cutting back .
In spring , this Donald Wyman crabapple(Malus‘Donald Wyman ’ , Zones 4–8 ) make a vast display in the front garden .
Along the driveway , beds in spring are fill withbulbs , admit this orangish ‘ Princess Irene ’ tulip(Tulipa‘Princess Irene ’ , Zones 3–8 ) .
Uvularia grandiflora(fairybells , Zones 4–9 ) is a favorite industrial plant in the garden . Thisperennial for shadeis native to wooded areas over most of the easterly half of North America .
Visible in this side view of the bottom at thefoundationof the house are loom Struthio camelus ferns(Matteuccia struthiopteris , Zones 3–7 ) , Spanish bluebells(Hyacinthoides hispanica , Zones 3–8 ) , and violent columbine(Aquilegiacanadensis , zone 3–8 ) .
Allium‘Purple Sensation ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) is here underplanted with starrysolomon ’s seal(Maianthemum stellata , Zones 3–7 ) , which is aboriginal to fairly much all of the United States and Canada , with the exception of the Deep South .
The front of the sign of the zodiac in summer . far-famed plant include the orange Mexican sunflowers(Tithoniarotundifolia , annual ) , the huge pink - domed flower head ofJoe Pye weed ‘ Gateway’,(Eutrochium maculatum‘Gateway ’ , Zones 4–8 ) . The shorter yellow flower are yellow coneflower(Ratibidapinnata , Zones 3–8 ) , while the supertall xanthous flowers to the left arecup plant(Silphium perfoliatum , Zones 3–9 ) .
purview from the front door , with wild bergamont(Monardafistulosa , Zones 3–8 ) and cup plant .
Clematis‘Jackmanii ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) transform a brick wall into a heavy rampart of purple .
In this view of the business firm looking from the sidewalk , bee balm(Monarda didyma , Zones 4–9 ) is in the front , backed by the huge , fragrant blooming ofLilium‘Conca d’Or ’ ( zona 4–8 ) .
In late August , the genus Rudbeckia , especiallyRudbeckiatriloba(Zones 4–8 ) andR. fulgida(Zones 4–9 ) , come out taking over with their sunny flowers .
