A garden of cool colors and fun pots
I just scrolled again through Keith ’s Zone 3 picture ( Return to Keith ’s Zone 3 Garden ) of his garden full ofhot - coloredannuals and perennial . So vibrant ! Hmmm . . . For a moment I dream about take on a new colour palette in the forthcoming growing time of year , but realistically , I know I ’ll return to the mostlyblue , lavender , andgreenthat I love . Even my garden accents are blue . My name is Kathy Schreurs , and I garden with my married man around our 130 - year - old house in Sheldon , a Zone 4b corner of Iowa .
My menage members were a little surprised when I bestow Blue Foot home a few years ago . ( So was I , aboveboard . ) It ’s very heavy and does n’t move around much . This past summertime it hung out in our frontborder , surprising guests and piquing the curiosity of the kids next doorway .
The ( mostly)hostafront border was one of the first flower beds I planted on the property , a few years after we buy it 25 years ago . The area in front of the spotter fencing was add afterward . The wedge of white to the left field of the pavement in front of the house is a small bed of ‘ Diamond Frost’euphorbias(Euphorbiahybrid , annual ) . I like to distribute those around the border and corrupt them by the flat . Recently I ’ve been experimenting with the other Diamonds in the PW series ( ‘ spate ’ and ‘ Snow ’ , but my center belongs to the first , ‘ freeze ’ .
In the outflow this area combust withtulipsandalliums . Tulipa‘Spring Green ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) is my favorite tulip variety , and I ’m happy that it riposte class after year .
An specially rough late winter in 2022 take its bell ; our ‘ Jack Frost ’ brunneras(Brunneramacrophylla‘Jack Frost ’ , Zones 3–8 ) and sweet-smelling woodruff(Galium odoratum , zone 4–8 ) did n’t survive . Gardeners are optimists , correct ? I replaced them this past summer .
We enjoy many varieties ofsongbirdsthat either migrate through or draw close in our backyard . They appreciate the multiple birdbaths we maintain . This small one lord it over an ever - grow eyepatch of lily of the valley(Convallaria majalis , Zones 3–8 ) . I look the other room — both of my gran contributed to my first pips — and now that they are gone , the little bells inJuneare sweet admonisher of them .
Another birdbath stands at the corner of a small layer outside our back door .
Browallia‘Endless miniature ’ ( Zones 9–11 or as an yearly ) in the shade
‘ Eyeliner ’ Asiatic lilies(Lilium‘Eyeliner ’ , Zones 5–8 ) in earlyJuly
I plant evolvulus(Evolvulus‘Blue My judgment ’ , Zones 9–11 or as an one-year ) in a cracked birdbath this past time of year . It ‘ Blue My Mind ’ all summertime ! ( My husband practice extra holes for drainage . )
This blue slew is kept ship’s company by daylilies(Hemerocallishybrid , Zones 3–9 ) inJulynear our garden shed . The Citrus limon - scented daylily has been with us for about 20 years , and I do n’t retrieve its name . It has been separate several times . Its original home was where our garden shed now brook .
Kathy sent so many expectant photos that we ’re going to do two days in her garden , so fall back tomorrow for more !
