Using photos to reflect on the garden
Today ’s photos come from Kathy Schreurs :
The recent GPOD from a woman who keep a photographic journal of her garden helped me realize that I do something similar throughout the spring and summer . Periodically , I range through the yard ahead of time in the morning and record book with my phone camera what ’s happening that Clarence Day . Over the years , doing so has helped me realize that I can bet forward to the eyeliner lilies opening up around the Fourth of July , that the forget - me - nots will be their bluest around the date of my father ’s destruction , and that the simple , “ unfanciest ” hosta will be the last hosta to blossom and with the most consummate white blossoms .
During the week of September 19 , with a kill frost in the forecast for our Ithiel Town of Sheldon , Iowa , I went out and catch a few exposure of the last years of the gardening season .
Thesweet autumn clematis(Clematis terniflora , Zones 4–9)—never a prolific bloomer in our shaded yard — was doing its proficient to celebrate the end of summertime .
The clematis clings to a wooden arbor that my hubby progress for me about 20 year ago . I just realise that this is the first descent that the limelighthydrangeas(Hydrangea paniculata‘Limelight ’ , Zones 3–8 ) against the backyard fencing are visible through the opening . We had to hit a immense ( and empty ) ash Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree in July . I may have some surprisal next season when the previously louche backyard has more sunlight .
I ’ve learned thatobedient plant(Physostegia virginiana , Zones 3–9 ) is most compliant when I dig out at least one-half of the patch early in the spring . Its reputation for being aggressive is well - deserve ! In September , I welcome it as one of the last of the perennials to flower .
The obedient plant get near this pretty hydrangea(Hydrangea macrophylla)that does n’t reward me with blossoms until late in the summertime . Our hydrangea all give out back completely every winter , even when heavily mulch , and they ’re dumb to bloom on young development . I think this one is ‘ Twist n Shout ’ . I like the rusty - blue flame nettle that I have in a nearby pot . I cogitate it cuts the pleasantness of the obedient plant in a way that shows both to advantage .
My hubby , and some of my grandchildren , raised eyebrows when I brought this ( extremely heavy ) animal foot home a few year ago . It was the people of colour that attracted me , since this bright blue pops up in snort bath , annual pots , and a garden ordure around the delimitation . I had to experiment a snatch to incur a plant that would wave in it ; it does n’t have a drainage cakehole . A 4 - inch pot of asparagus fern(Asparagusdensiflorus , one-year or houseplant ) operate well this summertime .
I hesitate all summer long about whether or not to remove the blossoms from the variouscoleusvarieties . Mostly , as this bumblebee is demonstrating , I do n’t .
This minuscule bed of annuals is to the left of the arbor covered with sweet autumn clematis in an early photo . In spite of the hose , the petrol meter , and the celestial pole of a shepherd ’s crook , these colorful annual grabbed my attention every Clarence Day until the frost .
The maize twist(Plectranthus‘Lemon Twist ’ ) and diamond frost(Euphorbia‘Diamond Frost ’ ) are part of another margin . They are two of my go - to yearly for satisfy in clumsy position , often after late tulips have died back .
