Favorite survivors of an upstate New York gardener
Hi , I ’m Deidre Gilchrest and I ’m a backyard gardener . Where I hold out in upstate New York , the land is Lucius Clay . It ’s been quite the challenge , mostly through trial and erroneousness , to learn what will and wo n’t survive . Then there are the rabbit and squirrels to postulate with . One time of year they almost wiped my garden out , along with a pocket gopher who take up residence in my neighbour ’s yard . They mop all my heirloom roses , my fruit trees , and any soft vegetation they could eat . You ’d guess I ’d throw in the towel , but it just made me more determined to get ways to ascertain and deliver the goods in my gardening . My favorites in my garden are my forenoon glories and my mock orangeness shrub . This twelvemonth I ’m hop my snowball viburnum will put on an even bigger show than last class . The huge snowballs bring me such joyfulness . We have so many birds in our garden , but my favorite is the cardinal , as he sings to me while I ’m hard at work planting or weeding . This spring I ’m add bring up garden beds to my yard in hope of produce vegetables alongside my beautiful flower . I ’m in Zone 5 , so hopefully spring will be here shortly .
A path lead you deep into the lush garden .
Shrubs and perennials are mixed together for a full , diverse boundary line .
Yuccaflowers ( Yucca filamentosa , Zones 5–10 ) make a tremendous statement in summertime .
A purple moment in the garden , play up by a beautiful vine - draped archway .
A thick evergreen hedging forms a backcloth for this part of the garden .
All fowl are welcome , but shiny red cardinal number in particular so .
English lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia , Zones 5 – 8) looks so beautiful . I like you could smell it too !
Purplemorning glories(Ipomoea tricolor , yearly ) living up to their name and being just resplendent !
