Knobby rhubarb pushing itself up through the ground is a trusted sign of spring around here . In my northerly climate , we ’re still wait on berries and it will be months before stone fruits orapplesare in season , so it ’s always fun to make the first pieplant desserts . With no fourth dimension to make a Proto-Indo European , I simmer some pieplant in water until it achieve a sauce - like consistency , and then flavor it with honey and vanilla extract . you may also make a simple pieplant sauce with orange , maize or Ceylon cinnamon flavors to complement the notoriously tart still hunt .

rhubarb plant sauce can easy be store in your kitchen icebox orcannedfor pantry storage until you ’re ready to use it for a dainty . A dessert I late bring to friends is an upside - down patty , spiced with ginger and cardamom , in which my rhubarb sauce played a take role . fragile - slice uncooked rhubarb will forge just as well in this recipe , though , as the slice will soften nicely as the patty cooks on top of them .
