Successes in a new garden
Today ’s photos are from Tina Tyzzer .
We built a raw place in 2016 ( zona 6 , Indiana ) on 6 acres that had been farmed for the previous 50 + eld . In bitchiness of my being a gardener for more than 20 years , not much survived the first yr . Thevegetable gardenprovided enough for the table , but not much for the wintertime , so I did asoil testand discovered that we had a very eminent pH scale ( 8.0 ) . We ’ve been makingcompostand amending the soil from this and bed from our poulet coops . From all view , 2020 was a very sorry class , but at least we grow to spend more time in the garden !
I have develop African daisies(Osteospermum , yearly ) before but never with the achiever of this yr . They just tumble over each other .
Although I did n’t find manypollinatorson the African daisies , this moth did seem to relish them .
All of our sunflowers(Helianthusannuus , yearly ) have self - inseminate from old years and/or were spread by our detached - ranging chickens .
A favorite spot for the sunflowers is just off the porch , where they are sheltered from the wind . There were century of sunflower seedlings there that had to be cut . There were still enough left .
Sunflower blooms are amazing at every point of their life story .
We establish lots of bolshy to attract hummingbirds , but monarchs enjoyed this part of the garden as well .
The only garden that has boom since the origin is our bee garden , which was planted by seed in front of our six beehive . It is so laden with plants that we have not contribute anything to the soil , so nature has in spades taken over here . This year the yellow lanceleafcoreopsis(Coreopsis lanceolata , Zones 3–8 ) come out to have taken over , but theMonarda(Zones 3–9),Echinacea(Zones 5–9 ) , and purple spiderwort(Tradescantiavirginiana , Zones 4–9 ) are hanging in there . The surprising affair was that other beautiful pollinators far outnumbered the honeybees , so definitely we will be expanding this garden .
And last but not least , we ask for all form of wildlife to our gardens . There were twin fawns that showed up several times . This was the intrepid one ; the other is hidden between the corn course . It ’s a good thing we grow slew to divvy up ! We used a strand - link fence to keep the predator away from the wimp coops . I hazard we should have also enclosed the vegetable garden !
