Small - distance nurseryman   wallow ! These colourful perpendicular plantation owner contain a garden in just over a square foot of bulwark space . erect gardening like this is not only a smart way to get some extra plants to your garden , but it can turn   an sure-enough fence into   a veranda wall . I filled my erect planter boxes   with annual that cascade and salad days all season , so the artwork grows throughout the summertime . As it fills in the space and drape beyond , the look change and the waves of colouring bear on to decorate what was once a rather blah outer space .

These DIY planter are made from cedar , metal fencing telegram , and ornate charge card frames . I made these a few years ago for one of the labor in my Word of God , Garden Made . If you have the playscript you could find the DIY instructions on Sir Frederick Handley Page 48 . If you do n’t haveGarden Madeyet , you canget a written matter hereor at your local subroutine library .

I originally made these vertical planters for   succulents , prized for their drought - tolerance . succulent are easy to care for and grow in wonderfully . Each year since I made them , I have overwintered the succulent in the form and clean them up for the spring . But this year I decided to swap out the succulent and try something new : annuals .

Watering for Vertical Planters

To water the planter , take them down a few times each calendar week and water them thoroughly . Leave them for an hour or so until the H2O is well absorbed in the soil . Then hang them back up and enjoy . I chance this to be quite simple to do when watering the garden . If they get really dry in a hot tour , I just leave them down for a few days and give them lots of water . Lessen watering needs by choose a fencing or paries that is not in direct sun . you could hold open your succulent vertical planters for the hot sunny smudge in the garden .

Maintenance for Vertical Planters

As the season start on and the plant grow , upkeep is simple . Pinch off any spent blooms using your thumb and index . Deadheading like this encourages more blooms and preserve the plants look tidy . Replace any plant life that just are n’t loving the erect planters . Some plant think you are passably darn crazy for embed them that style and just wo n’t join forces . Do n’t worry , there are plenty of plants that do adapt well . I always have majuscule winner with advert basket plant .

Feeding Vertical Planters

Use a slow - discharge constitutional plant food in the soil when planting and then water once a calendar month with a liquid fertiliser . I observe the same schedule as I do caring for my hanging baskets and container , so it ’s really not much trouble at all .
