It ’s been a tenacious , cold wintertime here in the East — and not just for the humanity but for all the keep creatures . Wild birds have been emptying our feeders and suet John Cage on a day-by-day cornerstone , and our chicken have been enjoying a breakfast of hot oatmeal every morning . Even thesquirrelsare begging for a few extra goober !
The other creatures that are for certain shinny are thedeer . It ’s been a bit of a challenge keeping them out of the garden this winter . They ’ve been hungry and sampling Tree and shrubs normally exit untouched . I ’m struggle because I know there are far more deer than our forests can sustain . Naturally culling the herd , as a winter like this will do , is part of the rude cycle of things , but I do n’t like know that something is starve to decease .
Like many gardeners , I ’ve covered my evergreen shrubs with charge plate netting to keep the deer from browsing the branches , but I was too late in begin to some of the deciduous trees and bush before the deer manage to nibble off all the buds . I plausibly wo n’t get manyblueberriesthis year and my fringe tree wo n’t flower because the stem tips and buds are all kick the bucket . The deer also piece forth all of the apple trees ’ fruiting spurs that were within reach . They have n’t repair to sampling the Turkish boxwood yet ( it seems to be one of their least favorites around here ) , but I suspect it wo n’t be long until they do , especially if the boxwood continue to be the only unfenced plants sticking out of the snow .
I was at the provender depot yesterday and in reality study buying some dry corn for the deer . I told myself that if I put itoutsidethe back gate , it would monish them from jumping the fence and dining on more of mytrees and shrubs . But I did n’t buy the corn because it ’s a risk I do n’t need to take .
I do n’t want to encourage the deer to come to my thou any more than they already do . Plus , I know that , in the summer , when they hop the fencing and chow down on my vegetable garden , I wo n’t feel so bad for them . When that Energy get back and eat all mycontainer plantingsto the centre , I will be cursing instead of pitying her . When the six - point dollar that on a regular basis stalk my K itch the barque off my new magnolia treeagainnext autumn , I will call up standing in the feed store in the dead of wintertime , considering run themon purpose , and I ’ll laugh at myself for even having such a silly thought .
But for now , I ca n’t help but remember about the greyish brown growing inside the ragged - sounding doe that ’s sniff at my boxwoods and marvel what nature has in store for the little guy . It ’s been a tough wintertime out there . For everyone .
