burst forth tomatoes were n’t what I had in brain when I engraft a new variety of cherry tomato plant this spring .
I first heard about ‘ Tomaccio ’ tomatoes last summer when I say a “ tweet ” from a gardening colleague about these sweet cerise tomatoes specially bred for drying . She drop a line that her tomatoes did n’t dry out on the vine and chalked it up to living in a humid climate . She refer gardeners in the juiceless West might have better luck .
That ’s why I jumped at the hazard to be part of a particular introduction and sampling program propose by C. Raker & Sons , Inc. , of Litchfield , Mich. The sweeping plant multiplication medical specialist sent ‘ Tomaccio ’ ( sound out toe - mah - chee - Buckeye State ) sampling in the outflow with education for how to grow them and how to dry them .
The lit explained it took 12 years of breed body of work in Israel , using wild Peruvian tomato plant varieties , to develop this epicurean cherry tomato that could be dry into sweet tomato plant raisins . I could reckon how drying would intensify the fruit ’s redolence and image throw away the raisin on salads or eating them for a bite .
I planted two plants — one in a large container and one in the garden — and portion out one industrial plant with a fellow worker who dwell in an even spicy and drier domain of Colorado . All the plant did well and the vine lived up to their “ extremely racy ” reputation . The yield grow on overnice long clusters , the Lycopersicon esculentum were attractively round , they resisted cracking , and the tomato were sweet and blue when eat up off the vine .
However , I was disappointed with what was guess to be the ground for growing these tomatoes — drying them .
Apparently , the recommendations for drying them are still develop as the company gains more experience with them .
There were three unlike sets of dry out recommendations that fare with the samples :
A dehydrator can also be used , but no specific instruction were provided .
When my gardening friend examine drying three Tomaccio clusters , following the 2 - 3 hours in a 200 point oven , she order the tomato plant were only rib at the 3 hr scratch . When she turn up the oven to 300 point , the tomatoes exploded .
When it was my turn to dry out several bunches , I used a pin to poke a small hole in the stem ending of each love apple to endeavor to deflect the burst forth Lycopersicon esculentum problem . I find the tomato took 9 hours and 15 minutes to dry in a 200 grade oven .
Because it ’s the nearing the oddment of the grow season , I may try get a few Tomaccio clusters dry on the vine or I might try dry them in a dehydrator just to see if I can get a good result .
It ’s too bad Tomaccio did n’t live up to its star billing . I was really look forward to have a nice provision of sweet Lycopersicon esculentum raisins to use throughout the fall .
