A plant nerd’s choices for winter color
My name is Andy Schenck , and I am a ego - professed plant life nerd , having worked in the horticulture industry since graduate from the University of Delaware many years ago . As the owner of a local sweeping baby’s room in Malvern , Pennsylvania ( Zone 6b ) , I pride myself on introducing Modern plants to my client . I often try plant introductions in my own garden , where I can see at first hand how they perform . I ’m sharing photos of plants from my garden that look in particular nice right now and are smashing selection forwinter interest .
Hollies are always top for winter interest , but how about a variegated one ? Pretty stunning ! This isIlex‘Solar Flare ’ ( Zones 6–9 ) .
Hamamelis‘Sunburst’(‘Sunburst ’ witch hazel , Zones 5–8 ) unfurls its chickenhearted wintertime blossoms against the backcloth of the barque ofPinustaeda(loblolly pine , Zones 6–9 ) .
This beautiful conifer — Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘ Korean Gold’(Zones 6–9)—has a narrow-minded , unsloped form and new growth flush favorable yellow .
This mix of evergreen plant foliage is from a seed - grownAucuba japonica(Zones 6–10 ) and aCephalotaxussinensis(Zones 6–10 ) .
Illiciumfloridanum ‘ Forest Mirage ’ ( zona 6–10 ) is avariegatedversion of an evergreen plant bush or small tree diagram native to southeastern North America .
The bright red berries ofNandina domestica(heavenly bamboo , Zones 6–11 )
Flower buds ofCornusangustata ‘ Elsbry ’ ( Zones 6–9 , also marketed under the name Empress of China ® ) . Most gardeners are familiar withdeciduousdogwoods , but this is an evergreen metal money , with abundant showy livid blooms in the spring and evergreen plant leaf all twelvemonth .
This hardy wintertime cyclamen(Cyclamencoum , Zones 4–8 ) has attractively patterned leaves all wintertime . Then in late winter or former saltation , it puts out showy pink or white bloom of youth .
Rohdea japonica(Zones 6–10 ) , an extremely durable evergreen plant recurrent for tone , is produce mostly for its glossy green leaves , but the red berries are a nice incentive .
Thujopsis dolabrata‘Variegata ’ ( variegatedHiba arbovitae , Zones 5–8 ) has evergreen offshoot irregularly marked with livid .
