The water holdall being connected to the diverter spout

Our tanks still sit down on the truck in front of the b waiting for us to drop off !

      • We have more updated pictures at the ending of this post from installing the totes .

The water tote being connected to the diverter spout

The water tote being connected to the diverter spout

It ’s a beautiful sight to us !   Two bright and shiny 275 gallon water supply totes that will become the backbone of our b ’s rooftop rainwater collection system .   They will be used to irrigate our entire garden , word of mouth , and flowerbed areas – and permit us attain our finish of using 100 % reclaimed water for all of our horticulture needs .

Thanks to another craigslist find oneself this past weekend – we picked up the two used holdall for just $ 40 each from a manufacturing plant .   They were used initially to hold molasses syrup for the intellectual nourishment plant – but they are in pristine term , completely washed , pick out and ready to start take hold our rainwater .   These storage tank have a huge 6″ cap opening on top for filling – but more importantly – with just a picayune modification using simple garden hosepipe adapters – we can turn over the 2″ bottom outlet into a standard garden hose hookup , unadulterated with a shut off valve .

Recycled water system holdall are a great way to store and use rainwater – just make certain your totes are clean and were not used to hold harsh chemical that could leave harmful residuum .

Our tanks still sitting on the truck in front of the barn waiting for us to unload!

We will eventually be installing our gutters on the b in the next few weeks . alternatively of directing the downspout into even run off drainpipe –   the rain from the metal cap will be convey by a small diverter put in in the downspout to meet the water tanks .

Our system is really middling canonic and very simple .   When both tanks are full – they will have 550 gallons of invigorated water – enough to irrigate our garden every twenty-four hour period for near a calendar month if mother nature decide to institutionalize a drought our way .   We will keep one cooler at the top of the back J. J. Hill above the garden shroud within the compost bin fencing .   The other tank will be instal at the back corner of the barn , veil behind a decorative fencing and large grasses . That tank will be   link up to the downspout to catch the rain H2O come off the metal cap of the b .   A simple flood subway system will be installed on the principal rainwater tank car that will send all excess piddle to the regular drains when the armoured combat vehicle become full .

The boastful hurdle to overtake was how to get water to our top tank .   It cause sensation to have the usable water up above the garden .   It ’s the highest item of the property – and if the tank is there , we can merely habituate gravity to irrigate all of our plants .   We first thought about using the tractor and a little wheeled poke to move the bins when full – but we decided it would just be too unmanageable to do – and probably terminate up damaging our tank with the constant movement .   So after a slew more mentation and a little research –   we have settle down on pumping the water from the bottom tank to the top storage tank   when need ,   using a permanently buried hosepipe and a small water heart power by an inexpensive solar energy organization

We will expend a simple downspout rain diverter to take water to the tank car

How does it function ?   – It starts with the utilization of a small solar venire that will attach on to the back of the barn roof .   The venire collect the sunshine ’s energy and charges   a small barrage fire panel in the barn .   That battery business leader can then execute the small electric pump and push the water up to the second armored combat vehicle with a simple somersault of a switch .   A dandy direction to get all of our future watering needs at no monetary value !

So – hopefully with a little unspoilt weather and some circumstances – we can at least have the gutters and primary tank connected within the next week or two and begin filling the master b tank – with the solar pump and panel facility stick with concisely thereafter .   Our goal is to have the system operational by the principal planting of our garden in mid - May .   We will be sure to post updated pictures when we have it all up !
